Energy Policy, Science, and You

Energy Policy, Science and You
Presented by physicist John Droz, Jr.
Orono - September 22
Portland - September 23
Friends of Maine’s Mountains is sponsoring two presentations on renewable energy by John Droz, Jr., of Morehead City, NC and Brantingham Lake, NY. Mr. Droz is a retired physicist who specializes in energy education and public policy. The events are free and will be followed by question and answer sessions.

“Energy is one of the top three issues facing our nation financially and environmentally.  I believe it is important that people have a greater understanding of how our energy policy decisions are made. The tactics used by lobbyists to advance their products and causes are worth our attention. For instance, some advertisements say wind energy is free. Wind is certainly free, but generating electricity from wind is expensive—and people need to be aware of these distinctions,” explained Mr. Droz.

“Our nation's energy policy involves serious technical, economic and environmental challenges and it's important that citizens understand these technical matters—and then insist that their representatives make decisions based on science rather than politics.  There is well over a trillion dollars at stake regarding electrical energy—in addition to potentially enormous impacts on our environment.”

During the one-hour multimedia presentation, Mr. Droz will discuss such issues as
fossil fuels, industrial wind energy, geothermal power, nuclear power, and other
electrical power sources available to us.

Mr. Droz is a member of the Sierra Club, the Association for the Protection of the
Adirondacks, and other environmental organizations. He has undergraduate degrees in physics and mathematics from Boston College, and a graduate degree in physics from Syracuse University.

The first lecture takes place on Thursday, September 22, at the University of Maine Orono at the Donald P. Corbett Business Building, Lecture Hall 100, from 6-9 pm.

The second identical lecture takes place the following night on, Friday, September 23, in Portland at the Deering High School Cafeteria from 6 to 9 pm.
